"During my service in the police I noticed that a lot of drug users are not the stereotypical drug user, the sort of person who is found laying in back streets. A lot of drug users I dealt with held full time jobs, often in safety sensitive areas of the workplace. These people admitted to taking drugs but do not consider themselves addicted. These people are prepared to obtain drugs from dealers that they would not normally associate with. The harsh reality of drugs is that I have seen lives destroyed and families put under immeasurable strain. I passionately believe that communication and education is the answer. People who use drugs need help and often want to find a way out of their situation. Our role is to help identify people using drugs in the workplace or other premises. we can then where applicable provide education and assistance to deal with the situation. Ours is not an enforcement role, our role is to either assist you to comply with your duty of care under the Work Health and Safety Act or to assist in making your premises safe for you or where applicable your guests."
